Light Adjustable Lens

LAL / LAL+

The Light Adjustable Lens (LAL/LAL+) is an intraocular lens (IOL) used in cataract and Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) surgery that can be customized after implantation using light treatments. This allows for fine-tuning of vision correction, potentially achieving better results than traditional IOLs. The lens is made of a photosensitive material that responds to specific wavelengths of ultraviolet (UV) light, enabling adjustments to correct refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

Key Features and Benefits:

  • Customization:

The primary advantage of the LAL is its ability to be adjusted after surgery to optimize vision based on individual needs.

  • Refractive Error Correction:

It can correct various refractive errors, including astigmatism, which is often difficult to address with standard IOLs.

  • Improved Outcomes:

Clinical studies suggest that patients with LALs are more likely to achieve 20/20 vision without glasses compared to those with traditional IOLs.

  • Post-Surgery Adjustments:

These adjustments are typically done in a series of short, in-office light treatments.

  • UV Light Protection:

Patients must wear special glasses that block UV light during the adjustment phase to prevent unwanted changes to the lens.

Considerations:

  • Not for Everyone:

Not all cataract or RLE patients are suitable candidates for LAL. Certain eye conditions may make it unsuitable.

  • More post-operative visits and higher cost:

LALs are considered premium lenses and are not covered by insurance.
