Comments:
Toric monofocal lenses are a specialized type of intraocular lens (IOL) used during cataract surgery, designed to significantly reduce astigmatism—a capability that basic monofocal lenses lack. These lenses provide a single, high-quality focal point, allowing patients to achieve either crisp far vision OR clear near vision. Unlike multifocal or extended depth of focus (EDOF) lenses, toric monofocal lenses do not correct presbyopia, the age-related loss of near focusing ability. Consequently, most patients who choose toric monofocal lenses opt to have their distance vision corrected, meaning reading glasses will be necessary for near tasks. For those seeking greater spectacle independence, some patients may elect a strategy called monovision. This involves correcting one eye for clear distance vision and the other eye for intermediate or near vision. The primary advantage of monovision is its lower associated cost compared to premium multifocal options. However, a potential trade-off is a slight reduction in depth perception. Keep in mind that not all patients adapt well to monovision. The decision of which IOL is best suited for you is a personal one. It should be made in close consultation with your eye doctor, carefully considering your specific vision needs, lifestyle, and personal preferences.
